Does anyone know the names of those irish acoustic songs U2 covered?

I know there's a couple of irish songs that U2 covered with acoustic guitars. One of them sounds like a lullaby. Do you have any idea what the songs are called?|||I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I know that U2 once used a song "Theme From Harry's Game" (originally by Clannad) on their tour.

Irish Names -- Elaine this is for you I couldn't add an answer to your question!?

Hi, Just to let all you Americans interested in naming their kids Irish names, you often get the spellings and/or pronunciations wrong, and it is a real pity. Elaine; 'Fionn' is not pronounced 'Finn', it is pronounced 'Fyunn'. Maeve is not spelt like that in Irish, because we have NO letter 'v' in our alphabet. It is spelt 'Meadhbh'. 'Aisling' is pronounced 'AshLING', not 'Ashlynn'. 'Niamh' is 'Nee-iv', not simply 'Neev'. Thank you!!!!|||Couldn't agree more!

it depends on the name , my name is Deirdre pronounced Deer-dra, my sisters name is Br铆d, pronounced Breed because the Fada over the i changes and strecthes the sound.

What do the names of the Irish political parties mean in Irish ?

When I went to Ireland, I saw that the names of the political parties were in Irish. Can you translate them, please ? I would like to know what they mean (I think Sinn Fein is we ourselves but I don't know for the other ones)|||Fianna Fail the most sucessful party means 'Soldiers of Destiny' and were formed by those who were against the treaty with the British (the Fianna were a band of warriors in Irish folklore who were led by Fionn Mac Cumhail pronounced MacCool)

Fine Gael 'Family of Gaels' was formed by a merger of the parties who supported the treaty

Irish names: What does Mc stand for? Does Mac mean the same in Scottish names?

Is Mc or Mac like Son-of ?|||Mac at the beginning of a surname is Gaelic for son of. Mc is an abbreviation that came to be used in some cases. Some people will try to tell you that one is Scottish and the other is Irish. This is not true I have seen both used in surnames from each country. While I am on it the O' before Irish surnames comes from a Gaelic word that means grandson of. The apostrophe is not really an apostrophe -in Gaelic spelling is a fada, a diacritical mark used in Gaelic.

mac Niall = son of Niall - modern MacNeil or McNeil

U铆 Niall = grandson of Niall-modern O' Neil or O'Neal

Once upon a time women also used "na" , daughter of as a prefix to a patronymic. Who is now named Maureen O'Brien ( from U铆 Briain ) would centuries ago have been

Maureen na Briain.

Yeah Jock, I agree that the Scottish Gaels come from the septs of the U铆 Niall Clan. My own background is Dal gCa铆s and Eoganacht-southern Ireland.

Sl谩n agus beannacht leat.|||yeah mac means son of in scotland and mc means son of in gaelich in ireland.|||yeah its like son of|||Yes, if you are a guy for example MacLeod (McLeod)

If you are a lady that would be Nicleod (NcLeod)

bassmeis...yes you'll have seen people with Mc in Scotland too, but if you dig down you'll find ther ancestors are from Ireland, probably the Northern half of Ireland too, just as are the O,Neill's|||Mc, Mac and Fitz means son of

The prefix O means descendant of.

That does not mean every McDonald is related. No doubt there was more than one Donald that had sons.|||I believe it signifies a clan or a family transcendence; as such, it is essentially a possessive surname.

Would it frustrate you if the characters in a book had Irish names, for those of you unfamiliar with Irish?

For those of you who aren't Irish, would it annoy you if you were reading a book with names like Aoibheann, Caoimhe, Róisín, Aisling, Bronagh, Clíodhna, Oisín, Ruaidhrí, Caolán, Pádraig, etc.? I really want to use those names for characters in something I'm writing. Would you be able to live with it if the story was fantasy? Would it help to have a pronunciation guide at the beginning or end of the book or is that just hassle?|||I actually prefer it if the characters have unique names that I haven't heard of. The usage of common english names annoys me more, to be honest. I have no idea why, but english names are kind of boring... I don't mean to offend anyone though...|||Yes. For a reader to truly feel a connection to your book they need to be able to at least pronounce the characters name. If you want to use Irish names then you should use the names, but use a spelling that everyone can relate to.

ex. Róisín (no one knows what that stands for or will even do the research.)

spell it = Rose, Rosheen, Rosa, Rosine so that people can pronounce it at least.|||No. It wouldn't.

Now go write. Seriously. Instead of worrying about everyone mispronouncing your characters' names.|||No. I personally would find it a relief in a fantasy story. Why do lots of Irish names have an 'O' in front of it?

Lots of Irish names have an 'O' at the beginning, like O'Reilly or O'Farrell. Why is this, does the O stand for something?|||In days of olde many people were named after their parents. Son of Brian became son O'Brien which later shortened to O.Brien|||absolutely. there are man examples of this: Van, Von, Mc, O, and even son as an ending. I have learned that all of theses equal the same meaning, which is "of". In your example, O'Reilly would mean "of Reilly" or "of Farrel" Usually dates back to a time where last name were not necessary. but when a man would have a child, then would name him "Garret O'Reilly" being that the fathers name was indeed Reilly. Obviously, this was much more popular with the Irish. hope i helped.|||I believe it literally means "descendant of", meaning that the patron of the lineage had the name that appears after the O. O'Conner folk are the descendants of someone named Conner way back down the line, that sort of thing.|||It doesn't stand for "of", its supposed to be written as 脫 and in Irish means "grandson of".

Ignore that stupid Sicilian troll.|||because irish people are drunks.|||It means "son of".

"Of" gets shortened to O'

In Scotland, Mac means the same thing, so Donald's son Fred would be Fred McDonald. In England he would have been Fred Donaldson.|||It is shorthand for "of".

Do British and American know how to pronounce Irish names?

why does it seem they know right how to pronounce Irish names like Seamus, Lachlan and Dun Laoghaire???

it's just they're popular and because of the culture??|||Its because the names conform to the pronunciation of modern English phonetics. When a G is followed by a H it becomes silent. Same with A and O, the A becomes silent. So long as Irish and English use the same alphabet, there won't be any issues in pronouncing Irish names (minus the accent of course).|||Of course they do, Scots built the foundation of this country and the Irish (later) added to the mix. Their cultural influences can be felt today.

Why don't we call Ireland Éire when we say Taoiseach and Garda and Tainiste and other Irish names?

I think it sounds nicer as well.|||It sounds much nicer, it should be called Eire.|||You could take this to its logical conclusion and ask just why we don't just switch between Irish words and English words a few times in every sentence.

Personally, I hate it when people (a lot of people from Britain do it) write EIRE (gan fada) at the bottom of an address that is otherwise in English.

....... Co Dhún na nGall, Éire or Co Donegal, Ireland.|||Why do't we say Báile Átha Cliath and Luimneach ect.?

Because its Irish, and we no longer speak Irish but English (Yeah thanks England.) and Ireland is the English :)

We say Taoiseach and Garda just like the British say Prime Minister and America say cops. Its just why, and also I think its because it is the Irish taoiseach so they say it in Irish.

Also on most maps you'd see "Ireland (Éire)" :)|||good question. If we did that irish would definitly be recognized as a language all over the world :)

Its just always been like that i suppose. When we were with England it was the the united kingdom of Britain and Ireland, then with the treaty england renamed us the irish free state and we just kept ireland as each government went in and out up to now. It would be nice for everyone to call Ireland Eire or Eireann?|||It makes much more sense to call them prime minister, mp's, police etc then by calling them Irish. No one really uses irish in every day life anyways. OP you even proved this point by misspelling tanaiste.

It just seems really silly to call every thing Irish when we all speak english|||I agree.Éire it is then.No more calling it Ireland. :)|||it does sound nicer and i think it should be changed to Éire
