Can you translate to Irish Gaelic the names Hunter, Tanner and Eathan?

I would like these names translated to Irish Gaelic if anyone can please|||There are no Irish versions of those names. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Irish people were forced to change their names to the closest sounding English names. So someone called S茅amas would have been called James in English, because they sound similar, not because the names are translations of each other. You also have other names like Colleen or Erin that are anglicised versions of Irish names, so they also have an Irish "translation". But Hunter, Tanner and Eathan don't fit into either of these categories, so you can't translate them into Irish.|||The Irish word for "hunter" (one who hunts) is "sealgaire" , but it's not used as a given name.|||Never heard Hunter as a name in Irish, Tanner is a surname - 脫 Tan煤ir for a male, N铆 Tan煤ir for a female. Eathan - again not an Irish name so there isn't really a translation unless you make one up. Aodh谩n would be the closest I could think of, it's the Irish for Aidan, and it's pronounced Aythawn, it's a lovely name.

Irish Gaelic translation of the names Cassandra and Cassie?

i want to get my name in irish gaelic on my wrist but i cant find out what it is and i want to be sure before i get it done. so i hope you can help|||"Cassandra" is neither an Irish name, nor is it a Gaelic name. It's Greek and German. Therefore, you will not be able to directly translate your name into Gaelic.

However, you can translate the meaning of the Greek name "Cassandra", and match it with the Gaelic name meaning the same thing.

"Cassandra" means "unheeted prophetess"... basically, "prophet".

Here are the Gaelic equivalents:

"Ainmire" meaning "Great Lord"

"Cairist矛ona" and "Cairist矛ne" meaning "Follower of Christ"

"Chevonne" meaning "God is Glorious"

"Cr铆st铆ona" meaning "Follower of Christ"

"Ffraid" meaning "The Exhalted One"

"R铆ona" meaning "Queenly"

etc...

Also, the Gaelic names "Cassidy" means "Curly", and the Gaelic name "Casey" means "From Cayce".

Does anyone know how to pronounce the Irish male name Moriarty?

Irish Accents on Names ( Irish Gaelic Speaker Only Please)?

I have recently started learning irish gaelic. I noticed there are accents on some words and names. My question is does the irish name Shannon spelt differently in irish gaelic with the accents and all?|||Shannon is an anglicisation but the Irish doesnt have any fadas.

In Irish its "Sionainn"|||the accents on vowels signs that the vowel should be prononuced differently. So 谩 is prononuced (roughly) "aw", 贸 is "closer" and a bit longer, etc. It also change the prononuciation of compounds.

Anyway, Shannon is an anglicization, and it has no accent on it.

Opinions on these Irish names please?

They're all Irish names. I live IN Ireland and therefore they won't be any problem so there's no need to point out that people will find them hard to say/spell because they're all very common names where I live.

For a girl:

脕ine R贸is铆n (Awn-yah Row-sheen)

Caoimhe Bl谩thnaid (Kwee-vah Blaw-nid)

For a boy:

This one is super pretty for a girl....脕ine R贸is铆n (Awn-yah Row-sheen)

Where do these names come from are they irish?

im irish and im trying to trace back family history maybe this way would be a quicker way to find out.. the name Hagen? and the name magurk? are these irish?|||They sound Irish.|||Hagan and McGurk/McGirk are both Irish names. McGurk is in the very popular Irish song "The Irish Rover"

Why do aslot of black people ion america have Irish and English last names?

I've read because the black woman had babies with them during slavery and after slavery.|||One can only reason that the slave owner's had intimate relations with their slaves and as a result either chose to give the child a "white" last name or not to recognize it at all.|||it's due to two things:

1. if from slavery then because their slave owners gave them those surnames

2. if from africa, perhaps when some converted to Christianity through missionaries they changed their names|||~ because they inherited their surnames from the slave master.~ some even inherited a house or land.~|||History...|||You answered your own question surely?|||My name is not Toby!|||"Aslot"? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha|||What last names did you think they'd have - Russian?|||To get welfare money easier

How do you pronounce the Irish name Kennis?

It's Ken and nis

nice name good luck|||Rhymes with Dennis. Nice name!|||Not quite sure but it looks like probabley Dennis, but with a K. Its a beautiful name.|||I looked it up, it should sound like Ken iss, the 2nd n is silent.|||Kennis is a beautiful name, literally, the meaning of it is "beautiful."

It is pronounced exactly how it looks. The link has a pronunciation guide that will help you see the Irish names that are pronounced differently in Irish than we would read in English.

I hope it helps!|||Technically, the Irish names that aren't pronounced "how they look" to anyone not familiar with Irish Gaelic are just that -- traditional Gaelic forms. Kennis, on the other hand, just appears to be an Anglicization of Canice, a variation of Coinneach meaning "handsome/attractive; pleasant." Actually, the same root as the Anglicization Kenneth. ;)

And yes, Canice is basically said KEN-iss (or technically, KAN-iss, for the original form), so KEN-iss would seem correct here. Most Anglicized spellings exist to make the pronunciation clearer -- Angus rather than Aonghus, for example -- so you usually needn't worry about mispronouncing them. ;) You can hear Canice/Kennis said here, by the way: http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages/鈥?/a>

Hope that helps!|||KEN-iss

Is it true when the slaves were freed they were given mostly Irish last names?

Most kept former master's last names, or chose common ones, such as Silver or Smith|||probably... cuz Irish and Italians were also discriminated in U.S back in the day. and were not given jobs and were called animals... thats why so many started forming gangs|||I think they were humans, so they gave themselves their last names or stuck with their former slave masters' last names for the reason that centuries of mixing and loss of culture had taken place.|||I really do not think so. I grew up in the South and have lived in many different states (N, S, E %26amp; W), and have met many black people, and neither their names nor customs were Irish. There has to be a joke here somewhere - I do not get it.|||Emancipated slaves were rarely "given" last names. Most of them just tacked on whatever last name they though was cool. As another poster stated, many of them took the last name of the planter they worked for. I've noticed a lot of blacks with last names like "Jackson", "Franklin", "Jones", "Greene", etc.

Any Irish relation is irrelevant.|||Nobody gave them last names, they already had the last name of their masters, that's usually how it was done

What are some pretty Irish girl names + their pronunciations?

I've always loved Saoirse, pronounced SEER-shah. I just think it's absolutely beautiful. I met the most gorgeous little Irish girl with the name once, and I just fell in love with it. It's got such a pretty sound to it, and despite the complex spelling, I think it looks very appealing. It reminds me of something, but I can't quite think what.

Niamh is another I'm fond of, pronounce NEEV. It's short and spunky, and I love that. The spelling used to confuse me when I was younger, but I got over it. I like it a lot.|||I the Aoife (sp?)-- Pronounced ee-FAH is very pretty but maybe a bit too obscure for American usage.

There's also Sinead, pronounced shi-nayd, and Maeve (is that Irish? I think it is), pronounced how it's spelled.

Of course, my name is Erin and that's a pretty well-known Irish name, but not exactly what comes to mind when I think of pretty.|||Aoife (EE-fa)

What is the correct Irish Orthographical way to write names with O', Mac or Mc in them?

Hi,

I openly admit to being completely flummuxed regarding the proper use of O, Mac and Mc in surnames.

Correct me if I am wrong. If a name is in Irish, a space should go between the Mac, Mc or 脫, such as Mac Eoin, 脫 Fiach, etc.. However, if the surname is in English then the space is dropped, e.g. MacDonald, O'Brien.

Am I right, am I wrong?|||Your are correct . . . . .|||Absolutely, O'.....

Why do some Irish last names have two capital letters?

I mean names like O'Brien, O'Neill, McDonald, McFarland, etc.

Looking for reliable sources.|||Mc is short for "mac", the Irish word meaning "son", so the name McX means "son of X". When there's an "O" in the name, it means "grandson of" or "descendant of". This is because the Irish word "贸" means "from".|||Mc, or Mac means "son of" so the actual last name would be what follows, thus the capitalization. Not too sure about the O though.|||I dont know. The stage productions of Irish dance were called 'Riverdance' and 'Lord of the Dance'

When a group of people get together informally to Irish dance it is called a 'c茅ili' (pronounced kay-lee), this is often called 'c茅ile dancing'.|||step dancing, clogging, jig|||Clogging is not a term for Irish dancing, but a term for a Western style of dancing that offshoots of Low British dancing, taking bits of Irish, bits of Scottish, bits of tap, you know.

Irish jig is not another term for Irish dancing, because it's more specific where Irish dancing is a general term (Irish reel and Irish hornpipe for example, also fall under the category of Irish dancing).

As previously mentioned, ceilidh (as it can also be spelled) is a term used, but it's more social, and resembles square dancing more than the stuff you see on Riverdance.

It can be called stepdancing in some instances, but the preferred term actually is Irish dancing.|||Clogging and jigging, probably among others|||Irish jig

What Irish boy names do you like?

What's your favorite Irish boy names?|||Patrick|||Well, I like Jack, although it's getting quite trendy. Also, the "jax" in Ireland is the toilet, so if you live there you might want to take that into consideration! I like Micheal, the e before a is the Irish spelling. Aidan and Liam are sweet but also very trendy at the moment. Padraig is the Irish form of Patrick, but the pronunciation is similar.

I also like Eamon, pronounced AY-min. Also Conor, Brendan, Killean, and Ronan. Ronan is Irish for 'little seal.'

Good luck!|||Conor or there's Setanta - named after one of our most legendary tribesmen.

Its the old Irish name for Fermoy. As far as I can remember from school it translated to something like "Abbey of the field men" or something to that affect.

These days its called Mainistir Fhear Ma铆

Which of these Irish male names do you like most?

I realize these may be strange to those of you outside of Ireland or those who are completely unfamiliar with Irish culture, language rules and phonetics. But please try your best and choose the name you like most =) Thank you
